Should pictures of the prophet Mohammed be drawn? shown? published?

What are the pros and cons of either creating or distributing likenesses of the prophet Mohammed? What is your take?

  1. I think that the likenesses should *not* have been published.
    Here is my reasoning:

    - what is the purpose of the original publication? to shock? to show the world that liberal democracies with free speech can do what they want? to show that nothing is untouchable by satire? I still do not understand the purpose of the original publications.

    - not everyone in the world shares the western love of satire. we should not force this on those who do not appreciate it.

    - i really really wish that the rest of the world could lighten up and learn to laugh at themselves. but as with other relationships in my life, I have learned to hold back and not push an issue .. use kid gloves if you will. a much better approach is to respect a point of view and then gently prod and question. not every job needs a big hammer.

    - i abhor violence and i completely denounce the attacks. but what i cannot understand is that they must have known that attacks were more than likely to come. a small percentage of the millions of islamists would take action. which brings me to my first point.. what was the purpose of publishing the images in the first place? what reaction did they want?

i appreciate any comments... please be as honest as you can.
